Reflections 2024

“Reflections,” is an installation of shouldered grief, regret, rumination, and new hope. An homage to those the artist has survived and those he has left behind. Exploring the intricacies of moving on after tragedy and what holds someone back from doing so. As well as the bitterness of knowing that those currently held dear, will have no concept of the difficulties once faced.

Steel, ink, moss bed, found stone and concrete.

The structure of the sculpture is made of welded steel, reinforced with silicone. The frame is placed onto concrete feet and divided into two sections. One part containing a live moss and rock garden, and the other a bed of ink and water. 4’x2’x1.5’.

The dialogue.

The projected short film is cast over the sculpture, and upwards toward the wall behind. Angled so the text of the film is reflected downwards for the viewer to read as captions on the surface. However, it is doubled and at various times becoming intentionally illegible for the audience.

Why do you paint flowers?

I think I’m just lonely.

I’m searching for those I’ve lost in petals.

And also

Aren’t they pretty?

Behind matte, frame, and glass

They won’t be hurt here anymore.

So I’ll keep painting flowers until

I can join them.

And maybe then will I be forgiven

Because I’ve continued to breathe

In spite of their lungs filling with ink.

But I’d like to move on...
